Out of the 47% of women in the U.S. workforce, 1.7% are employed in the insurance industry, according to a 2022 survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In fact, since 2012, the number of women in insurance have comprised nearly 60% of the industry’s overall workforce.
The insurance industry continues to be a popular career choice for women today. Here, we’ll look at the top four reasons why.
Whether one seeks a fulfilling career path, a chance to pursue specific interests within the industry, or a flexible work schedule, insurance emerges as a versatile and accommodating choice.
1. Increased Representation
A study by The Pipeline and reported by Insurance Business Magazine revealed that insurance ranks fifth among industries in women representation, especially in leadership roles.
Over the past several years, the industry as a whole has created a culture of promoting and advancing women in leadership positions. This increase demonstrates the industry’s growing efforts to be more inclusive and diverse – making insurance a more inviting career for women to embark upon.
2. More Diverse Selection of Occupational Roles
The insurance industry has a wide range of career fields from which to choose, such as:
- Claims
- Underwriting
- Administrative work
- Marketing
- Customer service
- Technology
- Independent agency ownership
Even if someone has been out of the workforce for a while or never held a position in the industry, insurance offers a plethora of opportunities to start with, including entry-level positions and ones that afford on-the-job training.
3. Engaging Work
Because there are so many different occupations and products offered by the insurance industry, individuals can select the job that interests them the most.
For example, someone with a background in finance may consider actuary work an enjoyable position. Those who prefer not to be stuck behind a desk may find working in the field as an adjuster a great way to earn a living. Not a people person? Many administrative positions and call centers allow individuals to earn a living without having to come face-to-face with customers.
4. Greater Flexibility
For women who have child care responsibilities, are caring for a spouse or aging parents, or have any other work arrangement challenges, many occupations in the insurance industry offer flexible working conditions such as the ability to work from home, as well as part-time positions to suit a variety of life situations.

Whether one seeks a fulfilling career path, a chance to pursue specific interests within the industry, or a flexible work schedule, insurance emerges as a versatile and accommodating choice. As the industry continues to evolve, it presents women with not only opportunities for professional growth but also the chance to contribute meaningfully to a dynamic and resilient sector.
The bottom line? While insurance may not be for everyone, it does provide women with a number of great career opportunities and benefits.
